A travel specialist has revealed that many Brits are unknowingly driving up the cost of their holidays by making three common mistakes. With summer approaching, the busiest period for getaways, being aware of these pitfalls could save hundreds of pounds.
How Often You Search Matters
Travel expert Kate (@Thedonnellyedit) explained in a TikTok video that frequent searching for flights can increase prices. Airlines use dynamic pricing, so the more you search a route, the algorithm detects demand and adjusts prices upward. "If you find a good price, leaving it for a couple of weeks and constantly searching for it is not gonna make that price come down," she said. Kate advises booking immediately if you find a deal within your budget.
Consider Alternative Airports
Sticking to your local airport could cost you. Kate shared her experience of swapping Manchester Airport for Leeds, saving £300 on the same destination. She recommends using Skyscanner's "nearby airports" option to compare prices and potentially find significant savings.
Be Flexible with Dates
Adjusting travel dates by even one day can reduce costs. Kate noted that sometimes staying an extra night or booking for 10 nights instead of seven can be cheaper. She suggests avoiding standard seven- or 14-night packages and looking for six, 10, or 11-night deals to access rarely-sold discounts.
By following these three rules, travellers can enjoy their holidays without breaking the bank.
