Silva was already tearful before kick-off as he led the team out for the last time. City took the lead through Antoine Semenyo midway through the first half, but Aston Villa equalised early in the second period via Ollie Watkins. Silva was replaced by Mateo Kovacic just before the hour mark, waving goodbye to the fans.
Villa took the lead minutes later, with Watkins scoring again. City thought they had equalised through Phil Foden in added time, but a VAR review ruled it out. Guardiola became emotional again after the full-time whistle, showing appreciation to the fans and embracing Villa players before sharing a moment with Silva.
