Netflix has confirmed that a sequel to its surprise hit series La Palma is in development. The four-part follow-up, titled Florida, aims to deliver the same gripping intensity that earned the original a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and left fans 'yelling at the TV'.
What to Expect from Florida
Florida picks up just hours after the volcanic eruption depicted in La Palma. The story shifts to a Norwegian community in Florida, USA, unaware that a devastating tsunami generated by the eruption is racing across the ocean toward them. Billed as a standalone sequel, it promises to blend large-scale disaster with intimate human stories.
Creative Team Returns
Original writer Lars Gudmestad returns to pen the script, while Grey's Anatomy director Cecilie Mosli will helm all four episodes. Gudmestad expressed his excitement: 'To be able to make Florida is a dream I have had for a long time. Our ambition is to create a spectacular disaster series with characters audiences can recognize themselves in and truly care about.' Mosli added, 'People confronted with crises are the most fascinating starting point for drama.'
Original Series Success
La Palma, released in December 2024, quickly became one of Netflix's most-watched titles. It accumulated 70.3 million views globally, ranking as the 8th most-watched non-English TV title of all time. The series follows a Norwegian family on the Canary Island of La Palma facing an imminent volcanic eruption. Critics praised it as 'enjoyable and binge-watch-worthy,' with fans calling it a '10/10' experience.
Release Date
While no exact release date has been confirmed, Florida is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2027. The original series is currently streaming on Netflix.
