A new documentary titled The Curse of Love Island explores the pressures of life in the public eye following reality TV stardom. The two-part series is available to stream on Prime Video from July 26.
Documentary Focuses on Tragic Deaths
The programme examines the deaths of former contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, as well as host Caroline Flack, who all died by suicide. It features insights from former contestants, industry insiders, and close friends.
An official synopsis states: "Through the stories of former contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, who died by suicide within two years of each other, The Curse of Love Island examines the impact of reality TV fame in the social media age."
Former Contestants Share Experiences
Viewers will hear from past participants including Malin Andersson, Anton Danyluk, Luis Morrison, and Marcel Somerville, who recount their personal struggles after the show, including online abuse and financial difficulties.
ITV issued a statement to Prime Video saying that due to confidentiality they could not comment on individuals' welfare, but confirmed their duty of care procedures have evolved significantly over time. They added elements such as language and behaviour training for participants, a social media blackout during the show, and contact with welfare producers for 14 months after the show.
The documentary series is produced by Story Films and releases both episodes simultaneously.
