Metallica has made a substantial donation of £20,000 to Cardiff Foodbank, an amount that will provide 9,000 meals for people in need across the Welsh capital. The heavy metal band contributed through their charitable foundation, All Within My Hands, ahead of their sold-out performance at the Principality Stadium on Sunday night.
Donation Details and Impact
Rachel Biggs, CEO of Cardiff Foodbank, described the donation as "incredible" and said it would have a huge impact. The funds will help feed 1,000 people or supply 9,000 meals, and will also replenish the charity's warehouse at a time when donations have dropped significantly. Just two weeks prior, the charity reported that it had run out of essential items and had never seen its warehouse so empty.
"It takes the pressure off and gives us a bit of breathing space," Biggs said. "It really is much needed and we are so appreciative to the band."
How the Donation Came About
The band's foundation contacted the foodbank a few weeks before the concert. "We had an email come in recently from All Within My Hands Foundation, which is Metallica's Foundation. He said ‘We’re from the foundation. This is not a scam’. The band donates in cities where they tour to give back to communities and it said they wanted to make a donation to Cardiff Food Bank," Biggs recalled. "It was really exciting getting that email through."
Broader Impact and Awareness
Beyond the direct financial support, Biggs noted that Metallica's involvement raises awareness about food insecurity and the work of food banks. Last year, Cardiff Foodbank supported around 20,000 people, one third of whom were children. "It’s a chance for us to say people if you need support, please reach out to your local food bank; to thank our donors because this donation is incredible, but it’s the community who donate week in and week out. They’ve shone a light on what is a global issue and by highlighting the problem of hunger and food insecurity wherever they go they mobilise people so it encourages people to bring about change," she added.
This donation marks the largest celebrity donation ever received by Cardiff Foodbank. Popstar Taylor Swift also donated to the charity in 2024 after her Eras Tour stop at the Principality Stadium, an amount that allowed them to buy one-and-a-half articulated lorries full of food and create food parcels for 925 people.
Metallica's Community Engagement in South Wales
In addition to the foodbank donation, Metallica collaborated with the Welsh Blood Service ahead of their gig, encouraging fans to donate blood. The band's continued efforts to give back to the communities they visit underscore their commitment to social impact beyond music.
