Brisbane Broncos star Deine Mariner has received encouraging news following emergency limb-saving surgery on his leg. The 23-year-old developed acute compartment syndrome—severe swelling and pressure within the muscle—after the Broncos' loss to the Sydney Roosters on Saturday night.
Mariner briefly left the Allianz Stadium pitch with a corked thigh but returned for the final 15 minutes after being cleared to play. However, his condition worsened hours after the match, prompting an ambulance transfer to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney's inner west for urgent surgery.
Specialist Confirms Mariner Will Play Again
Broncos specialist Dr. Matt Hislop expressed confidence that Mariner will return to the field despite the severity of the injury. “He will play again,” Dr. Hislop told The Courier Mail. “It’s just a matter of when we can do it safely and minimise complications for Deine down the line.”
Dr. Hislop remained cautious about a timeline, stating, “It’s too early to put a date on that. If it goes exceptionally well, we will be accused of rushing him back, but right now Deine is a week-to-week proposition.”
Details of the Surgery
The surgical procedure involves a lengthy incision from the hip to the knee, with the wound left open to allow swelling to subside. “It’s like cutting a sausage and all the innards fall out, then trying to tuck that back in and stitch the skin together again,” Dr. Hislop explained.
Mariner’s leg will be closed in stages over the next week to ten days to prevent recurrence. He remains under observation in Sydney, receiving excellent care.
Road to Recovery
Mariner is expected to be sidelined for up to two months. His fiancée, Grace, thanked the NRL community for their support, writing, “Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your beautiful messages. It’s been a really tough few days but he’s on the road to recovery.”
