They were also eliminated from both domestic cup competitions. Key players Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are set to leave this summer, prompting a major rebuild.
However, the campaign could have been very different if certain decisions had been made before a ball was kicked. Harvey Elliott, who spent the season on loan at Aston Villa, won the Europa League but played only 277 minutes. A reunion with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at RB Leipzig could have given Elliott more game time and boosted his value.
Mohamed Salah's departure last summer, after a stellar 2024/25 season with 34 goals and 23 assists, could have allowed Liverpool to sign teenage winger Ousmane Diomande from Leganes for a bargain £17m release clause. Diomande, now valued at £65m, has 23 goal contributions for RB Leipzig this season.
Liverpool were also close to signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace on deadline day for £35m, but the deal collapsed. Manchester City later signed the defender for £20m in January, and Guehi helped City win the FA Cup, knocking Liverpool out in the process.
Had these moves materialised, Liverpool's season might have been far more successful. The club's chiefs are left wondering 'what if' as they face a summer of significant changes.
