Hearts Draw at Motherwell Fuels Title Race Tension and Injury Concerns
Hearts Draw at Motherwell Fuels Title Race Tension

The anger over referee Steven McLean's refusal to award a second-half penalty for a trip on Alexandros Kyziridis by Tawanda Maswanhise, even after consulting the VAR monitor, is likely to persist for some time. Ominous-looking injuries to Marc Leonard and Craig Halkett may also leave a lasting hangover from this pulsating draw at Fir Park.

Hearts Remain in Control

Hearts still have everything to play for, with the title race firmly in their own hands. This hard-earned result, secured by a Lawrence Shankland equaliser after a Stephen Kingsley own goal, means they are four points clear of Celtic at the top of the table. However, with a derby at Parkhead looming on Sunday, the outcome of this unpredictable campaign remains anyone's guess.

One thing appears certain: Hearts will need to prove manager Derek McInnes right in backing their bottle and appetite for big occasions to see the season through. With influential figures like Halkett and Leonard seemingly heading for the treatment table, even Wednesday's must-win visit of Falkirk becomes an exercise in anxiety.

McInnes will undoubtedly hope for more incisive forward play than witnessed in the second half after his side had clawed their way back into the match. Hearts remain favourites for a first crown since 1960, but dropping points to a Motherwell side battling for fourth place has only heightened the suffocating pressure and added to the casualty list.

First Half Action

The build-up was electric, with Hearts scarves twirling in the away end and a striking tifo in the home stands celebrating 140 years of the club. The noise levels were deafening, especially after Alexander Schwolow saved a Callum Slattery header within 40 seconds.

McInnes dropped Kyziridis and Islam Chesnokov from the side that beat Rangers, opting for a flat back four. Within five minutes, a promising move saw Kingsley and Blair Spittal combine to set up Jordi Altena, whose powerful low shot was parried by Calum Ward into the path of Shankland. But Stephen O'Donnell produced a fantastic last-gasp block to divert the goal-bound effort wide.

Neither manager would have been pleased with the early turnovers, but the stage was set for a captivating encounter. On 26 minutes, Motherwell took the lead. Elliot Watt played a clever ball behind the Hearts defence, and Maswanhise delivered a superb backheel to put Emmanuel Longelo in a promising position. He cut inside past Michael Steinwender and fired a dangerous low ball into the six-yard box, which Kingsley could only turn into his own net under pressure from Ibrahim Said.

Shankland Levels

Hearts took time to recover, but Shankland levelled two minutes before the break. A promising move looked to break down, but Beni Baningime forced the ball out left to Kingsley. His deep cross found Steinwender, who let it bounce before rifling a drive that Ward parried straight to Shankland. The Hearts captain made no mistake with a good touch and emphatic finish.

There was a VAR check for a Shankland dunt on Stephen Welsh, but the goal was given. Hearts then screamed for a penalty when the ball struck Longelo's outstretched arm, but got no joy. Just before the whistle, Leonard limped off after a challenge with Elijah Just.

Second Half Drama

Kyziridis entered for the second half, but an offside flag saved Hearts when O'Donnell was adjudged to have stepped into an illegal position before forcing home a sclaffed shot from Said. On the hour mark, Halkett went down with a calf injury and was stretchered off, replaced by Frankie Kent.

Kyziridis then went down under a challenge from Maswanhise, but referee McLean reviewed the VAR footage and opted not to give a penalty, despite it appearing the Greek winger was clipped. McInnes was booked in the aftermath. Pierre Landry Kabore came on for the off-form Claudio Braga and forced a save from Ward before Kyziridis put a header wide.

In a frantic finish, Motherwell felt they should have had a penalty when Maswanhise went down, but the officials were not interested. Hearts took a point and remain in the box seat.
