Dust Storms, Lightning Kill 96 in Northern India

Dust storms, heavy rain, and lightning have wreaked havoc across northern India, killing at least 96 people and injuring more than 50 others, officials confirmed on Thursday. The severe weather struck several districts in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, late Wednesday, causing widespread destruction to homes, crops, and infrastructure.

Casualties and Damage

According to local authorities, many deaths resulted from falling trees, collapsing structures, and lightning strikes. Emergency teams, including police and disaster response units, were deployed to clear debris from roads and railway tracks using chainsaws and cranes. The storms damaged numerous homes and power lines, particularly in rural areas.

Eyewitness Accounts

In Prayagraj district, residents described scenes of panic as the storm struck suddenly. “The storm came suddenly and the sky turned completely dark within minutes,” said Ram Kishore. “Tin roofs were flying and people ran indoors. We could hear trees falling throughout the evening.”

In neighboring Bhadohi district, Savitri Devi recounted a narrow escape. “We rushed outside when the walls started shaking because of the wind. Our roof collapsed moments later. We spent the night at a relative's house,” she said.

Government Response

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered officials to complete relief operations within 24 hours. He directed authorities to provide compensation and emergency aid to affected families. Administrative official Narendra N. Srivastava stated that emergency teams were working across the affected areas, assessing damage to homes, crops, and power infrastructure.

Storms are common in northern India during the hot season, which lasts from March to June before the arrival of the annual monsoon rains. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue.
