Fashion accessories retailer Claire's has permanently closed all 154 of its stores across the United Kingdom and Ireland, resulting in the loss of approximately 1,300 jobs, administrators have confirmed.
Administration and store closures
The company entered administration earlier this month, putting all 1,355 staff members at risk. Administrators announced that all stores would be shut down immediately, with no plans for a buyer to rescue the business. The closure affects locations in major shopping centres and high streets throughout the UK and Ireland.
Impact on employees
Around 1,300 employees have been made redundant, while the remaining staff were retained temporarily to assist with the closure process. The administrators stated that they would support affected workers in making claims for redundancy pay through the government's Insolvency Service.
Claire's, known for its fashion jewellery, accessories, and ear piercing services, has been a staple in UK retail for decades. However, the company faced increasing challenges from changing consumer habits, online competition, and rising operational costs, which ultimately led to its collapse.
Industry context
The closure is the latest blow to the UK high street, which has seen a wave of retail failures in recent years. Experts point to the shift towards online shopping, the impact of the pandemic, and inflationary pressures as key factors behind the decline of traditional brick-and-mortar retailers.
Claire's UK arm was part of the US-based Claire's Stores Inc., which itself has undergone restructuring in recent years. The UK stores were operated by a separate entity that entered administration, highlighting the difficulties faced by international retailers in the UK market.
Customers with gift cards or outstanding orders are advised to contact the administrators for further information, though it is unlikely that they will be able to redeem them given the immediate closure.
