The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has announced plans to close approximately 150 of its charity shops over the next two years. The charity stated that the proposed closures are necessary to ensure its shop network 'remains commercially sustainable' and continues to support its vital fundraising efforts.
Chief executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths cited an 'exceptionally challenging trading environment' currently impacting the retail business. The decision follows a review prompted by escalating operating costs and evolving customer habits, which have rendered some stores 'no longer financially sustainable'.
Around 90 stores are expected to close by the end of March next year, with the remainder shutting by March 2028. The charity also confirmed cuts to its central teams and functions that support the retail division, though it did not disclose how many workers would be affected.
The stores, which operate with support from volunteers, raise funds for the charity's research into cardiovascular disease. Dr Griffiths expressed gratitude for the contributions of colleagues and volunteers, acknowledging the difficulty of the closures for those affected.
