BBC Cost of Living Expert Issues Urgent Warning on HMRC Letters
BBC Morning Live's Cost of Living expert, Colletta Smith, has delivered a crucial warning to the public, emphasising that letters currently being dispatched by HMRC must not be ignored. Appearing on the programme, Smith highlighted that a significant number of letters are going out from government departments, including HMRC and the DWP, and recipients need to take immediate action, as some may require payment of additional funds.
Three Critical Letters You Must Not Overlook
Smith specifically identified three types of HMRC letters that demand attention, noting that some directly impact state pensioners. She explained, "The government are sending out letters at the moment, so something from the DWP and also HMRC you really shouldn't ignore. This time of year, especially if you've completed a tax return at the end of January, is when you might receive a letter indicating you owe more than anticipated."
The letters in question are:
- Letter IDMS99 – This indicates an amount overdue and is effectively a payment that is due, meaning you still owe a little more money.
- Letter IDMS99P – Known as a simple assessment, this constitutes an extra tax bill. Smith noted that more pensioners could face these as incomes rise while tax brackets remain static, potentially pushing them into a tax bracket for the first time.
- Letter on Possible Involvement in Tax Avoidance – If anything arrives along these lines, it is super important to open it and address the matter, even if just to be aware of the situation.
Royal Mail Delays Complicate Matters
Smith also addressed the widespread Royal Mail delivery issues across the UK, which may cause key letters to arrive late. She advised, "A lot of letters either aren't arriving or are arriving late. If you receive a wad of letters on one day, check the date the letter was sent. It may already be out of date, meaning you could have missed an appointment or already dealt with the situation via email or text."
Government Website Provides Clarification
To assist the public, the government has published a list of recent HMRC letters on gov.uk. Smith recommended this as a useful resource for double-checking correspondence. "It's quite a useful way of verifying if you've received something that matches their regular letters," she said.
Recent HMRC letters include:
- Letter CA2490 – Home Responsibilities Protection eligibility
- Letter CA4361 – National Insurance contributions
- Letter OCA300 – Repayment of student loan deductions
- Letter VPCF1 – Decision to cancel your VAT registration
- Making Tax Digital for Income Tax – Customer awareness letter
- Self Assessment – Claiming a repayment
- Stamp Duty Land Tax and Capital Gains Tax customers
Smith's warning underscores the importance of staying vigilant with financial correspondence, particularly in light of postal delays and potential tax liabilities.
