Chinese 98, a new fast food restaurant offering Chinese and Malaysian cuisine, is set to open in Newcastle city centre on Thursday, July 2. The restaurant will take over the former Gong Cha café and tea shop at Haymarket, which closed last summer despite earning numerous five-star reviews.
Location and Concept
Located next to a Metro station and between two universities, Chinese 98 aims to attract students and the general public with its 'cheap but delicious' menu. Manager Natalie, who will run the business with her mother, told ChronicleLive: "It's a great location for us to nab. It's right next to a Metro station and between two universities. We're hoping we'll be a big hit with the students, but also with everyone else as well."
Menu and Pricing
The restaurant will operate a fixed-price menu where customers can 'create their own meal' by selecting from a range of meat or vegetable dishes to accompany rice and a drink. Natalie explained: "We will have a fixed price menu to make things quick but also budget friendly, with the dishes changing depending on what our chef thinks will go down well at that time."
Opening Details
The opening has been about a year in the making, including legalities and renovation work. Chinese 98 will be open from 12 pm to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday.
