Brighton has been named the best UK city for independent coffee shop lovers, according to a new survey by Capital on Tap. The analysis of coffee shop data across the UK's largest cities ranked Brighton first based on the number of independent cafés per 100,000 residents and the proportion of coffee shops that are independently owned.
Brighton's Independent Coffee Scene Dominates
With 57.7 independent coffee shops per 100,000 people, nearly three-quarters (73.9%) of all coffee shops in Brighton are independently owned, far outnumbering national chains. This dense network of small, owner-operated venues reflects a strong local preference for independents: 44% of people in Brighton & Hove say they prefer independent coffee shops, compared with under 20% who favour chains.
Brighton offers close to 400 cafés to choose from, according to The Telegraph. The paper highlights Kennys Rock & Soul Cafe, described by customers as a "rock solid place" with "immaculate vibes", and 17Grams, the "café under the Alice mural" in Brighton's historic Lanes where "the friendly baristas know their stuff".
Time Out recommends Stoney Point for its laid-back charm away from the city centre bustle, and the Flour Pot Bakery, which has expanded to 11 locations across Brighton, Hove, Worthing and Portslade. Another success story is Trading Post Coffee Roasters, founded in 2017 on Ship Street. Now a bustling go-to for tourists and locals, it has expanded to the North Laine, Brighton Station and Lewes.
Norwich and Swansea Follow
Norwich ranks second, with 35.8 independent coffee shops per 100,000 people and 73.3% of its cafés unaffiliated with major chains. Local favourites include The Yard Coffee, known for excellent coffee and delicious toasties, and Strangers Coffee Company, which has earned hundreds of five-star online reviews.
Swansea takes third place with 28.7 independent coffee shops per 100,000 people, and 73.2% of coffee shops independently run. Like Brighton and Norwich, Swansea's coffee shop landscape is heavily weighted towards independents.
Chain-Dominated Cities
For those who prefer chains like Starbucks and Costa, Milton Keynes stands out as the UK's most chain-dominated coffee city, with chains accounting for over half (52.5%) of all coffee shops.
