A Tennessee woman's spontaneous act of kindness has snowballed into a massive fundraising effort, generating over $510,000 to help a 78-year-old DoorDash driver retire from his grueling delivery work. Brittany Smith of Manchester, Tennessee, told The Independent she was "floored" by the overwhelming response after launching a GoFundMe titled "Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again." The campaign has attracted donations from more than 12,000 people since its creation earlier this week.
A Heartbreaking Discovery on the Doorstep
The saga began on Tuesday when Smith, annoyed by her daughter's father repeatedly ordering Starbucks deliveries as rewards, checked her Ring doorbell app. She saw a "little old man walking up the steps" and struggling to climb a small staircase to deliver the coffee. "This poor guy is struggling to get up my stairs to deliver my very capable daughter her Starbucks," Smith recounted. The 20-second footage showed the elderly man, dressed in a red shirt and khakis, gripping the handrail tightly before leaving the order at the door.
Smith immediately asked her daughter's father, who is quadriplegic and often relies on delivery services, to send a larger tip through the DoorDash app. When that proved impossible, she turned to social media, posting the video online in hopes of identifying the driver. "I posted the video literally just looking for this man's name," she explained.
Connecting with Richard and Learning His Story
A Facebook user who recognized Richard from his regular DoorDash deliveries to her office provided his full name, though Smith declined to share his surname with The Independent at his request. After verifying his address and matching his car to the one in the video, Smith visited Richard and offered him a $200 tip. Remarkably, Richard first ensured Smith could afford the gesture before accepting.
During their conversation, Richard revealed he had returned to work delivering for DoorDash after his wife lost her job and needed expensive medication. The couple's finances were stretched thin, forcing Richard to supplement their income through the delivery app despite his advanced age.
The Viral Wave of Generosity
Upon returning home, Smith found the footage had gone viral on TikTok, with countless viewers asking how they could help. Inspired by the outpouring of concern, she launched the GoFundMe on Wednesday morning. Since then, her phone "has not stopped buzzing" as donations flooded in, surpassing $510,000 by Friday. "I had no idea that I was going to gain that much traction," Smith said, calling the response "overwhelming" but adding she'd "do it over again in a heartbeat."
Richard himself was reportedly so moved that he hadn't slept in two days, unable to stop watching the fundraiser's progress. A GoFundMe spokesperson confirmed the platform is working directly with Smith to ensure all funds safely reach Richard. DoorDash, which requires drivers to be at least 18 years old with a vehicle and valid ID, has been contacted for comment by The Independent.
Smith expressed joy at meeting Richard in person, noting, "He's more precious in person, so I'm glad that I got to meet him." The campaign continues to draw support, highlighting a community's collective effort to provide a dignified retirement for a senior citizen who had been forced back into the workforce.
