What Do the Vertical Yellow Lines Mean?

She explained that the two vertical yellow lines indicate loading restrictions. These are loading lines, meaning they are intended for vehicles making deliveries or collections. Drivers of vans or lorries can stop to load or unload goods, but general parking is not permitted.
Common Misconceptions
Many drivers mistakenly believe that double yellow lines alone prohibit all stopping. However, the rules focus on waiting. You can be waiting even if you remain in the vehicle, for example, sitting there for convenience rather than actively loading or unloading. Double yellow lines do not automatically ban loading or unloading. In many areas, you can load or unload on double yellows as long as it is continuous and necessary, and you do not cause an obstruction or break other rules.
However, loading and unloading is not permitted on double yellows when there are additional markings or signs indicating a loading ban. These include the two yellow blips on the kerb, as shown in Annie's video. The Highway Code further clarifies that double kerb lines signal a complete ban on loading and unloading, while a single line indicates restrictions are in force only at certain times.
