Thousands of UK drivers have been driving for years without understanding the meaning of vertical yellow kerb lines, a road marking that has caused widespread confusion. Even seasoned motorists are often stumped by this marking, which appears on kerbsides across the country.
What Do the Vertical Yellow Lines Mean?
Driving instructor Annie Winterburn, from Spot On Driving, recently posted a TikTok video to clarify the purpose of these markings. She explained that the two vertical yellow lines indicate loading restrictions. These are loading lines, meaning they are intended for vehicles making deliveries or collections. Drivers of vans or lorries can stop to load or unload goods, but general parking is not permitted.
Common Misconceptions
Many drivers mistakenly believe that double yellow lines alone prohibit all stopping. However, the rules focus on waiting. You can be waiting even if you remain in the vehicle, for example, sitting there for convenience rather than actively loading or unloading. Double yellow lines do not automatically ban loading or unloading. In many areas, you can load or unload on double yellows as long as it is continuous and necessary, and you do not cause an obstruction or break other rules.
However, loading and unloading is not permitted on double yellows when there are additional markings or signs indicating a loading ban. These include the two yellow blips on the kerb, as shown in Annie's video. The Highway Code further clarifies that double kerb lines signal a complete ban on loading and unloading, while a single line indicates restrictions are in force only at certain times.
Driver Reactions
A surprising number of drivers were unaware that these road markings relate solely to loading and unloading, rather than general parking or driving. One grateful motorist commented: "Wonderful. I thought that was for car drivers... thanks for clarifying that." Another driver with four decades of experience added: "Always helpful, I've been driving for 40 years and I'm still learning the theory aspect." A third said: "I never knew about the load/unloading lorries markings. Thank you."
This revelation highlights the importance of continuous learning for drivers, even those with years of experience. Understanding road markings can prevent fines and improve road safety.
