TSB and Santander have confirmed that no further branch closures will take place before 2028, a move that affects all 480 branches operated by the two banks across the UK.
The announcement comes amid a wave of closures sweeping the UK banking sector as more customers shift to online services. TSB currently operates 175 branches, while Santander has 305.
Commitment to branch networks
In a message to customers, TSB Chief Executive Nicola Bannister said: "I've got some good news about our branches. I'm pleased to confirm that we won't be closing any additional TSB or Santander UK branches before 2028, at the earliest."
Bannister added: "That matters, because I hear consistently from customers how much they value having a local branch and the help they get from our Money Confidence Experts. And I couldn't agree more."
Wider industry context
Other major banks continue to reduce their physical presence. Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, all part of Lloyds Banking Group, are set to close at least 247 branches in 2026 and 2027. NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) will close at least 49 branches in the same period, keeping their remaining 336 branches open until at least 2029.
Earlier this year, Santander confirmed it would shut 58 branches in 2026 and 2027. Once these closures are complete, no further closures will occur until 2028.
Santander's response
A spokesperson for Santander UK previously said: "In response to a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking, we are making changes to our branches to better support our customers."
The spokesperson added: "We will continue to invest in both our branch network - comprising of full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular Work Cafés – as well as our digital banking services, so we can be there to support our customers however they choose to bank with us."
