UK Safety Alert: 'Soft Bulalaet Gun' Toy Recalled Over Asphyxiation Risk
Toy Recalled Over Asphyxiation and Internal Injury Hazards

UK Safety Regulator Issues Urgent 'Stop Using' Alert for Children's Toy

The Office for Product Safety Standards (OPSS) has issued a critical warning urging consumers to immediately cease using a specific children's toy due to potentially life-threatening safety hazards. The alert targets a batch of the 'Soft Bulalaet Gun' sold by Smart Toys Limited, which has now been formally recalled.

High Risk of Asphyxiation and Internal Injuries

According to the OPSS, the toy presents a severe danger because it contains water beads that, if swallowed in their hydrated form, can obstruct a young child's airway. This blockage could lead to asphyxiation, a condition where oxygen is deprived, and may also cause internal injuries. The regulator emphasised that the product fails to comply with the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, underscoring its non-compliance with established safety standards.

The affected batch is identifiable by the code AJ2023-02 and was originally packaged in a cardboard box featuring the tagline 'let's experience the fun of war together'. Owners are advised to stop using the product at once and return it to Smart Toys Limited for redress, which may include a refund, replacement, or repair.

How to Report Unsafe Products in the UK

While companies bear legal responsibility for the safety of products they manufacture, import, distribute, or sell, unsafe items occasionally surface in the market. Consumers who suspect a product is hazardous are encouraged to report their concerns to the appropriate authorities based on their location:

  • In England and Wales, contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline.
  • In Scotland, reach out to the Advice Direct Scotland consumer helpline.
  • In Northern Ireland, get in touch with your local district council.

The OPSS notes that complaints may be forwarded to relevant local Trading Standards or Environmental Health Services, with information gathered helping to determine if further action is necessary. For more details on this recall, affected customers can contact Smart Toys Limited at 020 8571 1041 or visit the GOV.UK website.
