A tourist visiting Rome was left stunned after being charged €44 (approximately £38) for two small cups of gelato at a popular gelateria. The woman, identified as Nicole Ann, shared her experience on the Rome Travel Tips Facebook group, warning others of what she called a "tourist trap scam."
Unexpected Extras Drive Up the Bill
Nicole explained that she and her companion stopped at a branch of Don Nino, a gelato franchise with multiple locations across Rome. They asked for two small cups of gelato. However, the server allegedly gave them the smallest cup size but indicated it included three scoops each. Then, without Nicole's request, the server began adding toppings such as cannoli and macarons, implying they were complimentary.
When it came time to pay, Nicole thought the server said €14, but upon checking the receipt later, she discovered the actual charge was €44. The receipt showed she had been billed for two "cono maxi" (large cones) at €12 each, two "aggiunta panna" (added cream) at €2 each, two macarons at €3 each, and two pistachio-flavored cannoli at €5 each.
Reactions Divided Online
Commenters on Nicole's post had mixed reactions. Some sympathized, warning tourists to avoid gelato shops in heavily trafficked areas and seek out authentic options on side streets. One user advised, "Never get Gelato in tourist spots! Go to side streets. The ones in tourist areas are fake and have terrible Gelato." Another shared a similar experience where they successfully had unwanted toppings removed from their bill after objecting.
However, others criticized Nicole for not questioning the additions. One commenter argued, "You thought adding whipped cream, a whole cannoli and a whole macaron would be free? Guarantee there is a sign about the toppings. Sorry, but this time it's on you." Another pointed out that the gelateria is located near high-end shops like Hermes, so prices should be expected, and noted that Italian law requires visible price lists.
Don Nino has expanded beyond Rome to Florence, Spain, China, Mexico, and Ibiza, and recently opened its first London outlet in Paddington Square. The company has been contacted for comment but has not yet responded.
