A survey of 2,000 Monday-to-Friday workers has identified the top 30 unexpected moments of joy that lift Brits' spirits, with finding a parking spot without driving around topping the list. The research, commissioned by Gala and conducted by OnePoll.com, found that 33% of adults actively look for 'little unexpected joys' to improve dreary days, experiencing an average of three such moments per week. For 21%, these uplifting moments are most crucial midweek.
Top Everyday Joys
The most cherished small joys include getting home just before it starts raining, a delivery arriving on schedule, and remembering bags for the supermarket. Other favourites include ticking everything off a to-do list (19%), discovering a TV show with many episodes already available (17%), and realising it's a bank holiday the following week (17%).
A spokesperson for Gala said: "Sometimes it is the little things that can give you the most joy. In a busy week, those unexpected moments can help shift your mindset and add a bit of lightness to your day. It can also make the feeling even more rewarding when it comes when you least expect them. It's a reminder that even on the most routine days, there are still opportunities to find small pockets of happiness."
Workweek Impact
The study revealed that 69% of respondents consider Monday their least favourite day, with 51% generally disliking or hating it. Work-related stress (27%), fatigue or lack of energy (22%), and technology malfunctions significantly impact people's moods. Conversely, time-related wins—such as no queues or finishing work early—have the most positive effect on 26% of people. Thirty-three percent said an 'unexpected win' positively lifts their emotions for the rest of the day.
Gala's 'Push for Joy' button, launched on the streets of Manchester, aims to bring extra joy to the North West. The button will appear in Brighton on July 13, offering Brits the chance to win joy-related prizes, including a holiday. A spokesperson added: "It's clear that people don't need big milestones to feel better, it's often the quick, everyday wins that make the biggest difference. A small boost at the right moment can shift your mindset entirely and help you move through the day in a more positive way."
