Tesco Sausages Beat Richmond in Blind Taste Test
Tesco Sausages Beat Richmond in Blind Taste Test

In a blind taste test conducted by the British Brief, Tesco's finest pork sausages emerged as the winner, outperforming well-known brand Richmond, which finished last. The test compared own-brand sausages from five major supermarkets against Richmond, a household name in British cuisine.

Methodology

Editor Sophie Law enlisted five family members for a blind tasting of sausages from Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, M&S, and Sainsbury's, alongside Richmond. All sausages were cooked in an air fryer at 200°C for 10 minutes. Each participant rated them from one to five, and total scores were tallied.

Rankings from Worst to Best

  • Richmond (12/30): Despite being the nation's favourite, Richmond scored lowest. Tasters described them as having 'no taste or texture', being 'very soft and salty', and 'tasteless and very rusky'.
  • Aldi (17/30): Aldi's sausages had 'less flavour' but were the cheapest at £2.49 for six (400g).
  • Sainsbury's Taste the Difference (19/30): Flavourful and decent-sized, but pale in colour. £3 for six (50p each).
  • M&S (19/30): Better colour but 'chewy' and 'quite fatty' with an 'odd taste'. Priciest at £4.25 for 400g.
  • Lidl (23/30): Pork chipolatas praised for 'good colouring' and 'herby' flavour. Slimmer but good value at £2.49 for 12 (375g).
  • Tesco Finest (25/30): Described as 'salty, juicy and meaty' with great seasoning. £4 for four (440g), offering the most meat. Ideal for hot dogs.

The test demonstrates that supermarket own-brand sausages can rival—and even surpass—established brands in taste and quality.
