Tesco and Asda fuel deals: save up to £8 on petrol and diesel

Motorists are being urged to check the eligibility rules as Tesco and Asda offer up to £8 off a tank of petrol or diesel with special deals amid soaring fuel costs.

As of Wednesday, the average price for a litre of diesel had climbed to 200.11p, while petrol stood at 174.89p per litre, the RAC confirmed. This follows a new record high for diesel on Monday, hitting 199.18p per litre according to the RAC, surpassing the previous peak set in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Tesco's fuel discount offer

Tesco already provides the lowest supermarket fuel prices, averaging 197.6p per litre, according to the RAC. However, drivers can shave a further 8p off per litre by spending £60 in-store before 18 October. A coupon will be issued that can be redeemed until 25 October, with a maximum discount of £8.

Customers must spend £60 or more in-store at Tesco by Sunday 18 October to receive a coupon with their receipt for 8p off per litre of petrol or diesel at a Tesco filling station. The coupon can then be redeemed by scanning it at the petrol station till until Sunday 25 October. This means payment must be made in person, so it cannot be used at pay-at-pump services.

The maximum discount available is £8, which is £2 less than when this offer was available in August. As the average motorist fills up between 35 to 45 litres of fuel, most drivers will likely save somewhere in the region of £2.80 to £3.60.

Asda's fuel saving promotion

At Asda, motorists can save 5p per litre when they spend £40 in-store before 14 October. Customers must be Asda Rewards members and fill up by 31 October. The discount applies to a maximum of 99 litres of fuel. Without the deal, Asda is the second-cheapest supermarket forecourt, charging an average of 197.8p per litre, according to the RAC. Shoppers in Scotland are excluded from the offer.

Asda shoppers have been made aware of a '£40 rule' currently in operation, whereby those who spend £40 or more in store will receive a 5p-per-litre fuel coupon. The coupon is automatically added to the Asda Rewards app. Asda confirmed the offer is available at 262 participating Asda and Asda Express fuel sites.

Shoppers who spend £40 or more in a single in-store transaction between September 23 and October 14 will receive a 5p-per-litre fuel coupon in their Asda Rewards app, redeemable against a single fuel purchase until October 31 at participating Asda filling stations. The promotion could save drivers up to £3 each time they fill up a typical 60-litre family car, and is available at 262 participating Asda and Asda Express sites offering Asda-branded fuel.

Eligibility and exclusions

Tesco confirms there are more than 500 participating petrol stations. This deal excludes the Isle of Man, Tesco Express stores where Esso fuel is sold, unmanned petrol stations, and pay-at-pump services. Only one coupon may be used per transaction, and a minimum spend of more than £1 on fuel is required.

The coupon can be redeemed at participating Tesco-branded forecourts across Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Tesco Express stores selling Esso fuel and locations on the Isle of Man are excluded, meaning a Tesco store situated next to a forecourt does not automatically guarantee the coupon will be accepted there. Use Tesco's store finder to locate a Tesco Petrol Filling Station and confirm that a staffed kiosk will be open during your visit.

The £60 minimum spend at Tesco excludes: lottery products, e-top up, savings stamps, postage stamps, carrier bags, prescription medicines, infant milk formula, and purchases made at any café, tobacco kiosk, opticians, phone store, concessions, Travel Money, Tesco Bank, and Tesco Whoosh. Asda has brought back its fuel saving promotion at a time when household budgets are coming under increasing pressure from rising living costs.
