StubHub World Cup Ticket Cancellations Leave Fans Stranded, Advocates Say
StubHub World Cup Ticket Cancellations Strand Fans

StubHub World Cup Ticket Failures Spark Outrage

A growing number of World Cup fans who purchased resold tickets on StubHub received notifications just days or hours before matches that their tickets were invalid. Horror stories of stranded families, ruined trips, and lost thousands of dollars have flooded social media and local news, with advocates estimating thousands of fans may have been affected.

Brian Hess, executive director of the Sports Fans Coalition, told the Guardian: “The system is deeply broken and flawed at all levels. Consumers should not have to fight like this.”

Legal and Consumer Concerns

Bradford Clements, an attorney representing over 150 clients who claim they were misled by StubHub, said the company owes $2.4 million. “This happens over and over,” Clements said, noting that StubHub often blames sellers for last-minute cancellations, but that is frequently not the case.

A StubHub spokesperson said fans should contact the company for “World Cup specialist support” and attributed many issues to a faulty new ticketing app introduced by FIFA before the tournament. “The issues fans have experienced at this World Cup are transfer problems, not ticket problems,” the spokesperson said, adding that FIFA’s app “has experienced significant performance issues that have affected ticket transfers across all resale platforms.”

FIFA stated that its official platform, FIFA.com/tickets, “is the official ticket sales channel for the FIFA World Cup 2026. FIFA can guarantee the validity and delivery of tickets purchased through its official platforms.”

Steps for Affected Fans

Demand Tickets, Not Refunds

Hess advises fans to be “persistent with customer service and demand that they get tickets. Don’t just accept the refund.” He suggests refusing to end the call until a replacement ticket is provided. Chris Elliott of Elliott Advocacy recommends escalating in writing to a manager if normal channels fail.

However, replacement seats may be worse location-wise. StubHub’s FanProtect guarantee bases “comparable” on price, not seat location.

Dispute Charges and File Complaints

Fans who cannot attend can dispute credit card charges. US residents can file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and their state attorney general. International fans can contact local consumer regulators.

The Ticket Act, which bans speculative ticketing, passed the House last year but stalled in the Senate. Emily Peterson-Cassin of the Consumer Federation of America said the situation is a reminder that “the practice of ghost ticketing should be outlawed.”

Prepare for Arbitration

StubHub requires arbitration, preventing lawsuits. The process involves sending a “notice of dispute” by certified mail and paying a $225 fee for the American Arbitration Association to appoint a decision-maker. Consumer advocates urge Congress to repeal forced arbitration.

Other Options

Chris Elliott suggests buying shares in StubHub’s parent company to ask questions at shareholder meetings. Advocates recommend only buying “downloadable” tickets that are immediately available, or purchasing directly from FIFA or venues.
