St Helens ice cream drive-thru review: JJ's Ices worth the trip?
St Helens ice cream drive-thru: JJ's Ices review

A trip to JJ's Ices, an ice cream drive-thru in St Helens, delivered two sundaes for £11.50 in under ten minutes, though the advertised hot desserts were unavailable on the day.

The drive-thru, founded by Jordan Edwards from Haydock, has gained over 2 million followers across his social media platforms, where he posts customer interactions, new ice cream creations and long queues of eager customers. Edwards started the business in 2023 after returning from studies in the USA and 'found his true calling.'

The Drive-Thru Experience

Arriving after seeing videos of lengthy queues, the reviewer found only four cars ahead. The location was efficient, with an extra van added at one point so two cars could be served simultaneously, and service was completed within at least 10 minutes.

Despite the efficient service, the reviewer was disappointed to learn that no hot desserts were on offer because the van was having issues, information that would have been known had the social media page been checked beforehand.

Menu and Sundaes

The menu, handed through the window, offered a wide selection of ice cream combinations, from classic blue and red sherbet with raspberry sauce sundaes, sprinkles and Oreo crumbs for chocolate lovers, to ice cream trays for sharing or individual enjoyment, with Vimto-flavoured sauce and turtle jelly sweets, plus the classic '99 cone.

The reviewer chose the classic sherbet, noting it was not lacking in toppings or sauce, with every bite full of flavour. A friend opted for a chocolatey combination of cookies and Nutella.

Overall Verdict

Both sundaes cost a total of £11.50, a price for two ice creams that most would find 'too much,' and the reviewer would usually agree. However, given the unique experience and the amount of toppings on offer, a return visit is planned to try a hot dessert.

The concept of the drive-thru was the main selling point, and the reviewer hopes more food businesses adopt it. The drive-thru is located at Topps Tiles, St Helens WA9 1JZ, open from 7pm to 9pm Wednesday to Sunday.
