One in six single Britons have not been on a date with someone they first met in real life in the past two years, according to a new poll. However, 83 percent still express hope of meeting someone in person this summer, shunning online dating apps.
Confidence Holds Singles Back
The survey of 1,000 adults not in a relationship found that 60 percent admit their lack of confidence prevents them from approaching someone new face-to-face. Many cited fears of rejection and concerns about how they might come across.
Mecca Bingo Launches 'Bingo Wingman Service'
To help break the ice, Mecca Bingo has introduced its 'Bingo Wingman Service', with specially trained staff on hand to spark conversations, boost confidence, and turn shared glances into real connections. The initiative is backed by dating expert Cici Coleman.
Cici commented: 'In a world where so much communication happens behind a screen, it's no surprise that approaching someone in real life can feel daunting. Shared activities like bingo help take the pressure off traditional dates by creating fun, relaxed moments for natural bonding.'
Summer Seen as Ideal for Romance
Three-quarters of respondents view summer as the perfect season to find romance, with many citing it as an ideal time to expand their social circle. However, only 18 percent feel their friends are effective at helping them meet new people, and a third say their mates have made things more awkward.
Despite these hurdles, 52 percent prefer to meet someone organically in real life rather than rely on dating apps. Additionally, 37 percent are bored with traditional dates like drinks or dinner, and 35 percent find such dates feel like job interviews. Consequently, 26 percent now favour activity-based dates, where the shared atmosphere makes conversation easier.
Service Details
The 'Bingo Wingman Service' is available in select clubs every Thursday throughout June. Users receive a free plate of chicken wings to share on their date.
Sarah O'Neill, Director of Innovation at Mecca Bingo, said: 'Our research shows singles increasingly seek experience-led dating. With many lacking confidence, we wanted to offer a fun, subtle helping hand. Our clubs have always been social spaces where people come together to enjoy good food, entertainment, and shared moments.'
