Santander and TSB freeze branch closures until 2028

TSB and Santander have issued an update to customers confirming that no additional bank branches will close before 2028. The announcement comes as UK banks continue to reduce their high street presence, with services moving increasingly online.

Commitment to existing branches

TSB currently operates 175 branches across the UK, while Santander runs 305. A statement from TSB Chief Executive Nicola Bannister said: "I've got some good news about our branches. I'm pleased to confirm that we won't be closing any additional TSB or Santander UK branches before 2028, at the earliest."

Bannister added: "That matters, because I hear consistently from customers how much they value having a local branch and the help they get from our Money Confidence Experts. And I couldn't agree more. I know that branches continue to play an important role in supporting local communities, giving customers somewhere to turn for personal, face-to-face support. Whether you visit every week or only occasionally, it's reassuring to know your branch is there for you when you want to talk things through."

Context of wider closures

Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, all part of Lloyds Banking Group, are closing 247 branches during 2026 and 2027. NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) will also close 49 branches across the same period. After these closures, Lloyds Banking Group will maintain its remaining 336 branches open until no earlier than 2029.

Earlier this year, Santander announced it would shut 58 branches in 2026 and 2027. Once these closures are complete, no additional Santander or TSB branches will close until 2028.

Santander's response

A spokesperson for Santander UK previously commented: "In response to a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking, we are making changes to our branches to better support our customers. We will continue to invest in both our branch network - comprising of full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular Work Cafés – as well as our digital banking services, so we can be there to support our customers however they choose to bank with us."

The 58 Santander closures are scheduled across 2026 and 2027, with most taking place between March and May 2026, and a few by February 2027. Locations include Andover, Banbridge, Bangor, Berwick Upon Tweed, Bexhill-on-Sea, Bishop Auckland, Boston, Bridgwater, Bridgend, Cwmbran, Dover, Dunstable, East Grinstead, Enniskillen, Evesham, Glengormley, Gosport, Haverfordwest, Heswall, Holyhead, Huntingdon, Kirkintilloch, Leighton Buzzard, Leyland, Liskeard, London (North West), Lytham St Annes, Macclesfield, Maldon, Mansfield, Melton Mowbray, Merthyr Tydfil, Mold, Morley, Newbury, Newton Abbot, Northallerton, North Walsham, Ormskirk, Pontefract, Ramsgate, Redcar, Redditch, Ringwood, Saffron Walden, Scunthorpe, Shirley, Stafford, Stratford Upon Avon, Stranraer, Tonbridge, Turriff, Uckfield, Urmston, Welwyn Garden City, Whitehaven, Wilmslow and Woking.
