Royal Mail warns coins in envelopes risk damage and loss

Royal Mail has warned that coins should never be sent in envelopes because automated sorting machinery can damage them, potentially delaying delivery and increasing the risk of the contents being lost.

Letters pass through high-speed sorting equipment designed to process large volumes of post. Coins can damage envelopes as they move through the machinery, leaving the contents at risk of escaping before the item reaches its desired recipient.

Cash and valuables need secure packaging

Cash and other valuables need particular care when being sent through the postal network. The national postal service advises money should be packaged securely, kept out of sight and never advertised on the outside of the envelope or parcel.

The Post Office recommends using Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed when sending valuables. The service offers tracking, a signature on delivery and compensation for eligible valuables if a parcel is lost or damaged, subject to its terms and conditions.

Check service rules before posting

People sending money should also make sure they understand the rules for the service they choose. Requirements can vary depending on the destination and the type of item being sent, so it is worth checking the latest guidance before handing over a letter or parcel.

Royal Mail’s advice is especially relevant to anyone planning to send cash as a gift, perhaps for a birthday, wedding or other special occasion. Although putting notes inside a greeting card may feel straightforward, using an appropriate service and secure packaging can help reduce the risk of money going missing.

Customs charges warning for overseas parcels

Royal Mail has also warned customers receiving parcels from overseas not to ignore a grey “Fee to Pay” card if customs charges are due. Items can be held for around three weeks while payment is outstanding, after which they may be returned to the sender, according to HMRC guidance.
