Households looking to restore their towels to a soft, fluffy state can turn to a simple, natural solution that avoids vinegar or baking soda, according to cleaning experts. The Instagram account @thecleangroup, which shares professional laundry tips, has highlighted a method using two common household items that can revitalise hardened towels in a single wash.
The experts explained that towels often become stiff after just a few washes due to a build-up of detergent residue and over-drying. While some prefer a rougher texture, many seek a softer feel. The recommended approach involves soda crystals combined with tea tree oil, which work together to break down residues and eliminate trapped moisture.
'Soda crystals are very alkaline, so they break down the residues left by your detergent that build up on your towels over time,' the group stated. 'Tea tree oil is antibacterial and removes trapped moisture build-up in the fibres, helping to make your towels 100 percent fluffy again.' They suggest using liquid soda crystals for easier handling.
To apply the method, add a capful of detergent to the drawer (or a liquid pod directly into the drum), then add a few drops of tea tree oil. Run the washing machine on a 60-degree cycle. After washing, shake the towels to loosen fibres and dry on an airer with a dehumidifier, or in a tumble dryer on low heat for just 10 minutes.
