Record Blue Badge Numbers Spark Fears of Widespread Disability Parking Fraud

A record 5.2 per cent of people in England, equating to 3.07 million individuals, now hold a blue badge disability parking concession. This marks an 8 per cent increase from the previous year, highlighting a significant rise in the number of permits issued across the nation.

Concerns Over Misuse and Fraudulent Activities

The AA has raised serious concerns, suggesting that up to one in five blue badges may be misused through various fraudulent activities. These include family misuse, counterfeit badges, and theft, with the organisation urging enhanced efforts to detect and prevent these offences.

Recent prosecutions by councils across the UK, such as Croydon, Barking and Dagenham, Gateshead, and Oxfordshire, have involved cases of stolen, counterfeit, or badges belonging to deceased persons. These incidents underscore the growing problem of blue badge abuse in public parking areas.

Expanded Eligibility and Reporting Mechanisms

The eligibility criteria for blue badges were expanded in 2019 to include people with non-visible conditions like Parkinson’s, dementia, and epilepsy. This change has contributed to the increase in badge holders but also raised challenges in monitoring proper usage.

Both the Local Government Association and the Department for Transport are encouraging residents to report suspected illegal use of blue badges. This collaborative approach aims to help councils tackle the issue more effectively and ensure that parking concessions are reserved for those who genuinely need them.

As the number of blue badge holders continues to climb, authorities are emphasising the importance of vigilance and community involvement in combating fraud to protect the integrity of the disability parking system.
