An airline pilot has shared advice for passengers who experience anxiety during flights. Simon Belmont, an Airbus A350 captain and fear-of-flying coach with over 130,000 TikTok followers, recommends three key steps to help nervous travellers stay calm before and during their journey.
Allow Plenty of Time
Simon emphasises the importance of giving yourself extra time on travel days. "If you're up against the clock, wondering whether that gate's going to close, it's stress from the second you leave your home," he explains. Arriving early reduces the pressure of rushing through traffic and airport security.
Be Courteous to Staff
The pilot advises passengers to be friendly and polite to all airport staff. "They're not trying to hold you up; they're doing their job and will get you through as soon as possible," he says. A positive interaction can lower stress levels.
Stay Fed, Watered, and Entertained
Simon stresses the importance of keeping snacks and entertainment handy. "Make sure you have snacks to keep blood sugar levels up, and stay hydrated to avoid feeling groggy," he notes. He recommends downloading videos, bringing card games, or packing small activities to keep the mind occupied during waiting times and the flight itself.
By following these simple steps, nervous flyers can significantly reduce anxiety and enjoy a more relaxed travel experience.
