A taste test of five popular breakfast teas has crowned PG Tips as the clear winner, with the budget brand outperforming more expensive rivals like Twinings, which finished last.
How the test was conducted
To ensure a fair comparison, each tea was brewed in three ways: a standard brew with sugar and milk, black without milk or sugar, and with milk only. The teas were ranked from worst to best.
The test proved more challenging than previous taste tests of hot chocolate brands and cereal bars, according to the reviewer.
The results
Twinings, despite its premium image, delivered a bold flavour but had an earthy, bitter taste with an unpleasant aftertaste. Yorkshire Tea was described as smooth and reliable but too cautious, earning a mid-table placement. Tetley surprised with its rich amber colour and bold, distinctive taste that complemented milk well.
Yorkshire Biscuit Brew, a sweet and malty option, came close to the top spot, evoking biscuits when taken with milk. However, PG Tips took first place, praised for its balance of body and smoothness, and its flavour held up whether drunk black or with milk.
The verdict
The reviewer noted that PG Tips was the tea they were most eager to continue drinking, calling it the truest measure of an outstanding everyday brew. The brand, established in 1930, remains a beloved household name.
