Popular Party Balloons Recalled Over Cancer Chemical Risk
Consumers have been issued an urgent safety warning as a popular party essential has been recalled due to serious chemical concerns. The Brand LOCKII balloons, manufactured in Germany but widely available through online marketplaces including Amazon, have been removed from sale after failing to comply with European toy safety regulations.
Chemical Hazard Identified
The recall was initiated through Safety Gate, the European Union's rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products. Authorities determined that the rubber balloons release excessive amounts of nitrosatable substances, with measured levels reaching 7.25 mg/kg. These substances can be absorbed through skin contact or oral exposure during play and can generate nitrosamines, which are known carcinogens.
The product does not comply with the requirements of the Toy Safety Directive, according to the official Safety Gate report. Public authorities have ordered the manufacturer to recall all products from end users and remove listings from online marketplaces.
Online Availability Concerns
While many LOCKII balloon listings on Amazon.com now show as "Currently unavailable" with no indication of restocking, some variations remained available for purchase on Amazon.co.uk at the time of reporting. The specific product code identified in the recall is ASIN: B0F48Y5KYB.
This recall follows concerning findings from consumer advocacy group Which? in December 2025. Their investigation revealed that dangerous balloons containing up to six times the safe level of cancer-causing chemicals were being sold through multiple online platforms including AliExpress, Debenhams, eBay, Shein, and The Range.
Broader Safety Investigation
Which? tested 21 balloons from various retailers and discovered that 8 contained carcinogenic chemical concentrations far exceeding UK permitted limits. The failing balloons came from sellers on AliExpress, Debenhams, eBay, Shein, and directly from The Range. Notably, balloons purchased from Amazon and Temu sellers passed their safety tests.
Consumer safety experts emphasize that when purchasing balloons, particularly for children's use, shoppers should look for official safety certification marks. In the United Kingdom, the UKCA mark indicates compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards, while the CE mark serves the same purpose within the European Union.
Manufacturer Responsibility
The recall highlights ongoing concerns about product safety in online marketplaces where third-party sellers may not adhere to strict regulatory standards. Public authorities have mandated that the manufacturer must not only remove existing product listings but also recall all sold units from consumers who may have already purchased the hazardous balloons.
This incident serves as a critical reminder for consumers to verify product safety certifications when purchasing toys and celebration items online, especially those intended for use by children who may be particularly vulnerable to chemical exposure through normal play activities.
