Octopus Energy Scraps Free Coffee Rewards, Launches Monday Scratchcard
Octopus Energy Replaces Free Coffee with Monday Scratchcard

Octopus Energy has replaced its popular free coffee reward scheme with a Monday Scratchcard, leaving many customers disappointed and some threatening to switch suppliers. The change, announced on Monday, July 13, 2026, ends the weekly release of codes for free coffee at Greggs or Cafe Nero, which were available every Monday at 6am.

New Scratchcard System Sparks Mixed Reactions

Under the new system, Octopus Energy customers can access a digital scratchcard on the company's smartphone app every Monday morning. Prizes include free coffee for lucky winners, but also other rewards. The company says the move makes winning fairer, as hundreds of thousands of customers can now win instead of a few thousand. However, the change has not been universally welcomed.

One disappointed customer said: "Very disappointed to hear we will no longer get our coffees, it stopped me from looking at other energy suppliers, but as my fixed deal is coming to an end next month, there is no reason not to change supplier now." Another added: "Think it's time to get off the Octopus train, last decent thing was the free coffee."

Customer Satisfaction Remains High

Despite the backlash, some customers prefer the new system. A Reddit user commented: "Seems preferable to always finding there are none available." Octopus Energy responded to complaints on social media, stating: "We wanted to make things fairer so every Octoplus member gets an equal chance to win throughout the day, without the morning rush."

Octopus Energy remains one of the UK's largest energy providers and ranks highly in customer satisfaction. In a 2026 analysis by consumer group Which?, Octopus Energy was named the second-best provider in the UK, receiving one of the highest customer scores and being designated a recommended provider.
