Morrisons warns of extra parking charge for overstaying

Morrisons customers could be hit with an extra “charge” when stopping their vehicle in supermarket car parks. Morrisons confirmed that road users would be slapped with a “parking charge notice” if they exceed their allotted time at stores.

Free parking limits and charges

Most Morrisons car parks offer between two and three hours of free parking before road users may be expected to pay. In a statement published on their website, Morrisons said: “If there is a charge for parking at your local store and you go over the allocated time, you will receive a parking charge notice. The cost and time to pay can vary depending on who the charge has come from.”

In an update sent to Express.co.uk, Morrisons confirmed that costs vary from store to store, with penalties depending on who owns and operates the car parks.

Rules and enforcement

Experts at StartRescue have warned that private parking firms must be a member of the British Parking Association (BPA) or the Independent Parking Committee (IPC). They explained that stores will have signs explaining their rules and what charges road users can expect to receive.

StartRescue previously said: “The vast majority of supermarket car parks have a maximum allowed stay - usually of between one and three hours.

“If you go over this time limit, you could be handed a fine. But how efficiently or strictly a car park is patrolled varies between locations. A list of rules should be displayed on a sign in the car park.

“Note that some car parks are fitted with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems that recognise number plates and can therefore alert the wardens if a car has overstayed the minimum parking period.”

Disputing a fine

Morrisons stressed that road users hit with parking fines can always dispute their case if they think the penalty was unfairly awarded. They said: “If you have received a parking charge notice that you are disputing, please contact our customer services team by completing the enquiry form below.

“Please be advised we will require the details on the notice and the receipt for your visit to the store for us to be able to look into this.”
