I quickly became enamoured with its capacity to produce drinks rivalling the $10 lattes from my favourite cafes.

Endorsed by the Guardian and the focus of countless TikTok tutorials, the moka pot has garnered acclaim for steaming mugs of cafe-quality coffee more affordably than espresso or Nespresso machines.

As warmer weather approaches, I’m delighted to reveal an often-overlooked application of this versatile coffee maker: crafting exceptional iced coffee. I’ll demonstrate the method and calculate the savings compared to cafe purchases.

What Is a Moka Pot?

A moka pot comprises three primary components: a bottom chamber for water, a middle funnel filter for ground coffee, and an upper chamber. It operates solely on a stovetop or induction plate.

When heated, pressure drives water through the coffee grounds into the upper chamber. While it doesn’t achieve the 9 bars of pressure of a standard espresso machine—using about 1.5 bars instead—it still yields a robust, high-quality brew.

How to Make Iced Coffee in a Moka Pot

  1. Start with fragrant, high-quality beans finely ground. A recommended choice is whole bean coffee from Counter Culture Coffee, a B-Corp certified brand known for transparent sourcing.
  2. For an intense drink, use a ratio of one part coffee to two parts water (2-3 tbsp grounds and one-quarter to one-third cup water). For a milder version, try 1:6 (2 tbsp grounds and three-quarter cup water). Add water to the bottom chamber and grounds to the funnel.
  3. Set your gas to medium heat and let the moka pot work its magic.
  4. While brewing, fill a 16oz glass halfway with ice and add 6-8 ounces of milk, adjusting for creaminess. Froth the milk for a cappuccino-like texture; the Nespresso Aeroccino 4 is a top frother, with the Aerolatte as a budget option. Higher-fat milk enhances consistency.
  5. Once you hear bubbling, the coffee is ready. Consider transferring it to a mug to cool for 5-10 minutes before use.
  6. Pour the coffee over the milk and finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

This calculation excludes the initial cost of a moka pot or frother, but these are reasonably priced gadgets.

  • Starbucks grande iced latte with milk: $7.78 (after tax and tip)
  • My iced coffee: Trader Joe’s Organic Soy Milk: $0.46 for a 6oz serving; Counter Culture Coffee: $0.93 per serving
  • Total savings: $6.39 per drink

Stovetop Compatibility and Cleaning Tips

The moka pot is safe for gas and electric stovetops. Induction cooktops require an adaptor, such as one from Bialetti, or a stainless steel boiler model designed for induction.

Cleaning involves rinsing each part with hot water after use, as it’s not dishwasher-safe and shouldn’t use dish soap. For a deeper clean, Bialetti recommends a baking soda, white vinegar, and lemon juice mixture. Ensure it’s completely dry before reassembly to prevent oxidation.

D’Ottavio advises drying immediately: "If residue is left in a humid environment over time, mold can develop – even in areas you can’t easily see."
