McDonald's Loyalty Scheme Overhaul: Customers Face March 17 Deadline to Redeem Points
McDonald's customers across the UK have been issued a critical alert this week, with a firm deadline of March 17, 2026, to take action on their Rewards points. Failure to redeem points before this date could result in missing out on valuable savings, as major changes to the fast-food giant's loyalty programme are set to significantly reduce the value of accumulated points.
Imminent Changes to MyMcDonald's Rewards Points System
According to warnings from consumer advice groups, including Save the Students and Money Saving Expert, the MyMcDonald's Rewards scheme will undergo a substantial overhaul from March 17. Currently, customers earn one point for every penny spent on eligible items at participating restaurants, with the first redemption tier requiring 1,500 points, equivalent to a £15 spend. This allows for free items such as soft drinks, McCafé hot drinks, McFlurries, fries, hash browns, and side salads.
However, from March 17 onwards, point thresholds will increase dramatically across all tiers. Save the Students highlighted on TikTok that "your points will suddenly be worth way less," emphasising the urgency for customers to act. The first tier will now demand 2,000 points and a £20 spend, representing a 500-point increase. Higher tiers will see even steeper rises, with increments of 1,000 points, meaning customers will need to spend between £5 and £10 extra to unlock the same freebies.
Detailed Breakdown of New Point Requirements
The revised point structure will impact all redemption levels, making it more challenging for customers to claim free items. Here is a comparison of the current and new systems:
- Tier 1: Increases from 1,500 points (£15 spend) to 2,000 points (£20 spend)
- Tier 2: Increases from 2,500 points (£25 spend) to 3,500 points (£35 spend)
- Tier 3: Increases from 4,000 points (£40 spend) to 5,000 points (£50 spend)
- Tier 4: Increases from 5,500 points (£55 spend) to 6,500 points (£65 spend)
Money Saving Expert reinforced this warning, stating: "You'll need 500 MORE points – or to spend £5 more – to claim the cheapest food and drink 'freebies' under McDonald's loyalty scheme from Tuesday 17 March. For higher value freebies, you'll need 1,000 MORE points – meaning spending £10 more."
Redeemable Menu Items Across Tiers
To maximise their points before the deadline, customers should be aware of the items available at each tier. The current scheme offers a range of options:
- Tier 1: Hash brown, medium soft drink, mini McFlurry, regular McCafé drink, side salad, small fries
- Tier 2: Apple pie, cheeseburger, cheesy bacon flatbread, four Chicken McNuggets, mayo chicken, medium fries, regular McFlurry, vegetable deluxe
- Tier 3: Chicken salad, double cheeseburger, Filet-O-Fish, McChicken sandwich, medium milkshake, sausage & egg McMuffin, six Chicken McNuggets
- Tier 4: Big Mac, double Filet-O-Fish, double sausage & egg McMuffin, McCrispy, McPlant, McSpicy, nine Chicken McNuggets
Save the Students summarised the situation bluntly: "In other words, if you have some points on the McDonald's app and you want to claim a free Big Mac, do it now before it costs you an extra tenner."
Context and Company Response
These changes coincide with the launch of McDonald's latest menu update, which introduces 10 new items, including the Double Big Mac with Bacon, Spicy McNuggets, and an Easter-themed Cadbury Mini Eggs McFlurry. While McDonald's has not publicly detailed the adjustments, the company's website confirms: "From 17th March 2026, MyMcDonald’s Rewards is getting an update - including fresh new rewards and some changes to how many points are needed to redeem."
McDonald's has been invited to respond to inquiries about the scheme modifications, but as of now, the advice remains clear: customers with accumulated points should redeem them promptly before the March 17 deadline to avoid diminished value and increased costs for free items.
