A man who paid €25 (£21) per seat to reserve specific spots on a flight from Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, to Spain was left gobsmacked when he boarded and found a father and his young daughter already occupying his seats.
Seat Dispute Unfolds
The anonymous passenger, who shared his story on Reddit, explained that he and his girlfriend had pre-booked their seats to ensure they could sit together on the four-and-a-half-hour flight. Upon boarding, they discovered a man in his early 40s and his daughter, aged no older than 10, sitting in their seats.
“I politely mention that they seem to be in the wrong seats. He abruptly jumped down my throat to tell me that he can’t leave his daughter by herself,” the passenger recalled. Confused by the defensive reaction, he sought help from cabin crew.
Crew's Response
The crew informed him that the 10-year-old girl could not travel alone, but did not offer a resolution despite the passenger having pre-booked and paid for the seats. A young female passenger, also in her early 20s, intervened, explaining that by law, minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and that the father had not pre-booked seats.
“Frustrated but calm, I explained that this was unfair to me and my partner, as we had been prepared, and asked if there was no other way the issue could be resolved,” the passenger wrote. After a back-and-forth with the stewards, he eventually caved and sat in an aisle seat next to the father and daughter, while his girlfriend sat a few rows behind.
Escalation After Landing
During the flight, the passenger grew increasingly angry but tried to suppress his frustration. At the end of the flight, he approached the father and said, “Look, I’m not trying to get smart or thick with you, but I just wanted to say that I hope you realise that situation was frustrating for me, as I had paid extra for the seats and I had immediately been told no.”
This led to a “one-sided screaming match” that escalated quickly. The passenger noted that the daughter appeared “genuinely unbothered and unstressed during this whole ordeal,” contradicting her father’s claim that she was crying at the thought of flying without him.
Online Reactions
Reddit commenters sided with the passenger, expressing outrage at the father’s entitlement. One user fumed: “I would definitely be contacting the airline and requesting the paid seat money back as well as compensation for the drama.” Another raged: “There are lots of entitled people around, and you are not the a****** for trying to get what you paid for. His poor planning should not impact other paying customers.” A third added: “I’ve been on a few flights where parents expect everyone else to accommodate them; if you need to sit by your child, book and pay for the seats in advance.”
