The National Lottery is undergoing its most significant transformation in decades, with sweeping changes set to potentially double the number of millionaire winners across the United Kingdom. Operator Allwyn has unveiled plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the main Lotto draw, alongside the introduction of a groundbreaking new game inspired by the American Powerball lottery.
Revamped Lotto to Create Hundreds More Millionaires
For the first time since its inception in 1994, the National Lottery's flagship Lotto game is receiving a major upgrade. The key modification involves granting players two distinct opportunities to win for every standard £2 ticket purchased. This innovative adjustment is projected to more than double the annual count of Lotto millionaires, increasing from approximately 140 to around 345 winners each year.
Subject to receiving the necessary regulatory approvals, these changes are scheduled to be implemented starting from the 7th of June. The inaugural new Lotto draw will take place on the 10th of June, featuring a starting jackpot of £2 million. Jackpots will have the capacity to roll over up to five consecutive times, culminating in a mandatory must-be-won event on the sixth draw.
Powerball Comes to British Shores
In a historic move, Allwyn is launching the first entirely new game in the National Lottery's history: a United Kingdom-specific adaptation of the immensely popular American Powerball draw. Powerball, established in the United States in 1992, holds the record for creating the world's largest rolling jackpots, including a monumental $2.04 billion prize awarded in 2022.
British participants will pay £4 per line to enter this transatlantic competition, vying alongside American players for a shared jackpot that is anticipated to exceed £1 billion. For UK-based winners, this colossal prize will be disbursed over a thirty-year period. The UK version of Powerball is also expected to feature an uncapped jackpot commencing at £12 million, alongside a range of other substantial prizes, pending regulatory consent for a potential summer launch.
Substantial Boost for Charitable Causes
Andria Vidler, the Chief Executive Officer of Allwyn, emphasised that these strategic upgrades are designed to generate significantly increased funding for the National Lottery's extensive portfolio of good causes throughout the nation. The Powerball game alone is forecast to contribute an additional £1 billion to UK good causes over its initial five-year operational period.
More than thirty percent of each Powerball ticket's price will be directly allocated to the National Lottery's charitable initiatives. The modifications to the Lotto game are similarly predicted to yield millions of pounds in extra funding for these vital causes, which support sectors including health, education, arts, sports heritage, and various charities.
Ambitious Financial Targets and Recent Performance
Ms. Vidler articulated a clear vision for the future, stating, "We are delivering on our promise to bring more games, more entertainment and more innovation to the National Lottery. With extensive upgrades to our digital and retail channels now complete, we have a fantastic summer lined up."
She further explained the operator's ambitious goal: "This will raise more money for good causes, helping us reach our goal of doubling weekly returns to good causes from £30m to £60m by 2034." Currently, the National Lottery raises approximately £33 million per week for these charitable endeavours.
Recent financial disclosures from Allwyn indicate robust performance, with total National Lottery sales reaching £8.1 billion in 2025. This figure represents a 3.5 percent increase compared to the previous year. These sales generated over £1.7 billion for good causes and contributed £967 million in tax revenue to the Treasury.
The introduction of these new games and the enhancement of the classic Lotto draw represent a strategic effort to reinvigorate public participation. "By offering a wide range of complementary games, we're ensuring there is something for everyone – returning the magic, building our player base and making sure the National Lottery remains part of the national conversation," Ms. Vidler concluded.
