Lloyds Bank is set to close five branches across England in September, with customers in Birmingham, Carlisle, Chelmsford and two parts of London affected. The first closures will take place on September 23, when three Lloyds branches are due to close. These include the Birmingham Handsworth branch, as well as locations in Harrow and on Whitechapel High Street in the City of London.
Closure dates and locations
The Chelmsford branch will follow one day later, on September 24. Lloyds will then close its Carlisle location on September 29, bringing the total number of branches shutting during the month to five.

Impact on customers
The closures come as Britain's high streets continue to lose bank branches, with customers increasingly using apps and online services to manage their money. However, the ongoing decline in face-to-face banking has raised concerns about people who still rely on their local branch, particularly older customers.
The Civil Service Pensioners' Alliance previously warned that widespread closures are “creating real barriers to everyday financial independence” for thousands of pensioners. It added that “a visit to a local branch allows people to withdraw cash, ask questions and deal with problems directly with a member of staff”.
Alternatives and prior closures
Banks have increasingly turned to alternatives such as community banking services to support customers in areas where traditional branches are disappearing. Lloyds has already closed several other locations over the summer, including branches in Daventry, Bristol Fishponds and Horncastle in August. The latest five closures mean more customers will need to use alternative banking services once their local Lloyds branch shuts in September.
