The Tempest on Tithebarn Street is currently listed on Rightbiz with a leasehold price of £99,950. The venue has a turnover of £17,300 per week, which is just shy of £900,000 for the year.
The listing describes the venue as having “Total seating for 340, across three floors, with alfresco for 90 and roof terrace for 70. Superb city centre location, surrounded by offices, places of work, hotels, other similar industry businesses, ample car parking.”
Why is the venue for sale?
Iain Hoskins, Ma Pub Group Director, told the ECHO: "Our lease for Tempest on Tithebarn ran out earlier this year and we are in discussions with our landlord, Capital & Centric, about a number of options. Our preferred option is to negotiate a new lease and remain in the building and discussions with our landlord are ongoing."
Tempest is part of the Ma Pub Group, which also oversees Ma Boyle's Alehouse & Eatery, Nova Scotia, Newington Temple and Café Tabac. The business spans more than 5,000sq/ft across its ground floor and basement event spaces, and boasts a rooftop terrace that opens during good weather.
Break-in incident
The listing comes after the venue reached five years in business. However, what was supposed to be a celebratory day was ruined by a break-in in the early hours of Wednesday, May 27. The glass doors of the Tempest were left shattered, causing the venue to open later than usual.
At the time, Merseyside Police said “It is believed that nothing was stolen from the premises.” Iain said he found the whole situation “weird” as he was also unable to determine if anything was stolen from the venue.
When the venue first opened in the commercial district it did so replacing Hus and Folk, creating around 40 jobs with a £250,000 refurbishment of the building. Tempest has a heavy nod to New York's meatpacking district eateries, focusing heavily on brunches, lunches, cocktails and craft beer.
