Lidl Bakery Aisle Leaves First-Time Visitor Stunned by Quality and Value
A social media user has shared her first experience with Lidl's bakery range, confessing she felt she had been "living under a rock" for missing out on what she described as an "elite" selection. Lils Southall, who posts on TikTok as @lilssouthall, documented her taste test of five baked goods, sampling them in her car after a trip to the supermarket.
She explained that the bakery's reputation for excellence had drawn her in, and she found it "hard to choose" from the extensive array of sweet and savoury options. Despite some items being out of stock, Lils was thoroughly impressed with her haul, which cost less than £5, and vowed to return for more.
Brioche Croissant: A Chocolate-Filled Surprise
Lils initially questioned whether the brioche croissant was simply brioche in croissant shape, but her first bite revealed a delightful surprise. After an initial moment of disappointment at no apparent filling, a second bite uncovered a rich chocolate centre. "What do we have here?" she exclaimed, showing the camera the generous filling.
She noted that squeezing the pastry caused the chocolate to ooze out, so caution is advised. "That is delicious. Oh my god, that chocolate sauce," she raved, pairing it with a caramel coffee for a combination that made her "want to cry." She awarded it a perfect 10/10, calling it possibly one of the best bakery goods she had ever tried.
Sticky Cinnamon Bun: Perfect Balance at a Bargain Price
Describing the cinnamon bun as "perfect" in appearance, Lils was amazed by its quality, especially given its approximate 50p price tag. She criticised many coffee shops for failing to get cinnamon buns right, while praising Lidl's version for its ideal balance of sweetness and spice.
"It's the perfect balance of sweetness and cinnamon, and it's fluffy, sugary-perfection!" she gushed. Declaring it one of the nicest she had ever tasted, she gave it another 10/10 and joked about needing to visit Lidl weekly for a basketful of these treats.
Speculoos Doughnut: A Biscoff-Inspired Delight
This spiced, caramel-flavoured doughnut, inspired by Lotus Biscoff biscuits, features a soft dough filled with cookie butter spread, topped with icing and crushed biscuit crumbles. Lils was effusive in her praise, stating it was one of the best doughnuts she had ever eaten.
"I have been missing out. I've been missing out big time," she admitted, enjoying the fluffy texture, perfect Biscoff cream, and added crunch from the biscuit topping. She awarded it a third consecutive 10/10, feeling like she was in a "pastry bakery bubble" she did not want to end.
Caramel Crunch Cronut: A Sweet Hybrid Treat
Joking that a cronut is when a doughnut and croissant "have had a baby," Lils found this offering very sweet, reminiscent of a Greggs Yum Yum. She appreciated its slightly harder exterior and pillowy interior, calling it delicious.
However, she noted that the texture did not quite match her preference compared to the other items, leading her to give it a still-impressive 8.5/10. "This is a delicious sweet treat, I can't lie; however, I don't feel like I prefer this texture versus the other textures," she explained.
Rosemary and Sea Salt Focaccia Bread: A Savoury Finale
To balance her sweet selections, Lils chose this focaccia over a pizza or pretzel, praising its beautiful smell and taste. She found it perfectly soft, pillowy, and crisp on top, though she wished for a bit more sea salt—possibly lost in the bag.
She emphasised that everything tasted fresh, which made a significant difference. Overall, she struggled to pick a favourite, narrowing it down to the speculoos doughnut and chocolate brioche croissant, with the cinnamon bun also highly regarded. Her experience suggests a particular soft spot for the brioche croissant, leaving viewers eager to explore Lidl's bakery aisle themselves.
