A beauty editor's guide to building a K-beauty-style 'glass skin' regime with products under £20. I've tried countless beauty products, ranging from budget-friendly to high-end, but can own-brand products really compete? With guidance from a celebrity dermatologist, I set out to find the answer.
My Journey to Glass Skin
I've always desired that radiant, glassy complexion, but I lack the time, patience, and budget for a lengthy 13-step K-beauty routine. So, I attended a masterclass with renowned dermatologist Dr Nora Jafaar, Medical Director at Rejuvenation Clinic, known for transforming the skin of celebrities like Josie Gibson. She demonstrated how to achieve a glossy, glowing complexion using only Superdrug's own-brand products, all priced between £5 and £17.
The Five-Step Regime
Step 1: Remove Make-up and Pollution with a Melting Balm Cleanser
B. Melting Cleansing Balm, £17
Dr Nora's top pick: 'My favourite cleansing balm. I've tried many, but I always return to this one.' It effectively removes make-up and city grime because oils dissolve oils, clearing debris and make-up from the skin's surface.
Step 2: Create 'Glass Skin' with a Chemical Exfoliating Toner
Naturally Radiant Glycolic Acid Toner, £9
Dr Nora emphasises: 'If you add only one product, make it this. Glass skin comes from chemical exfoliation, not layers of serums.' Glycolic acid is a gentle yet effective choice for most skin types. Simply dab it on with your fingers.
Step 3: Start the Hydration Process with a Milky Toner
Me+ Milky Toner, £9
'Milky toners make your make-up look flawless,' says Dr Nora. Popularised by Hailey Bieber's Rhode Glazing Milk (£32), this affordable alternative contains humectants that draw water into the skin, while hyaluronic acid and lipids lock in moisture. Apply with fingers or a cotton pad.
Step 4: The Active Peptides
Superdrug Optimum Peptide Serum, £7.50 (usually £15)
Serums are the hardest-working step, packed with active ingredients for long-term anti-ageing. Dr Nora explains: 'Peptides are like collagen factories, stimulating collagen and elastin production. This serum contains effective peptides without the need for hundreds of ingredients.'
Step 5: Moisturise and Protect with Q10 and SPF
Superdrug Skin Essentials Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Day Cream SPF30, £5
This final step locks in moisture and protects the skin barrier. Dr Nora insists: 'SPF is the best anti-ageing product in dermatology history. Without it, your entire routine is pointless.' While a dedicated sunscreen is ideal, a moisturiser with SPF is better than none. For extra protection, consider CeraVe Hydrating Fluid Sunscreen SPF50 (£17.90).
After just one session, I could see and feel a noticeable difference in my skin's radiance. Achieving glass skin doesn't require a hefty budget—just the right products and expert guidance.
