Blocked drains are an absolute nightmare, regardless of whether they're causing havoc in your shower, bathroom sink or kitchen sink. When it's your kitchen sink that's affected, though, things can get considerably worse — unpleasant odours can quickly develop, which is the last thing you want when you're preparing a meal.
My kitchen sink had been draining sluggishly for at least seven months, but it was only recently that I noticed a foul stench rising from the drain. To tackle the problem, I first turned to two natural cleaning remedies. I began with the tried-and-tested white vinegar and baking soda method, but it proved completely useless.
My second attempt involved soda crystals, which had previously done the trick when I had a blocked shower drain — yet again, no joy. This prompted me to try two specialist chemical products, though only one — picked up from Home Bargains — actually did the job.
I started by pouring half of the drain unblocker down before using the whole bottle. I then rinsed the drain through with hot, though not boiling, water. When I turned the tap on, the sink wasn't draining quite as sluggishly, but it still wasn't flowing at its usual speed.
I opted to pour the remaining solution down, and this time I let it sit for two hours before flushing. Returning to the drain afterwards, I realised the smell had vanished, and when I ran the tap on this occasion, the water drained away normally.
To prevent my kitchen drain from becoming badly blocked again, I'll be making a trip to Home Bargains to stock up on this sink and drain gel.
