Jim Mair, 43, had appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court on July 6 charged with assaulting his wife Stacy Mair, 35. The case was continued for further examination and he was granted bail with a condition not to approach or contact her.
Just three weeks later, on Monday, emergency services discovered the bodies of Jim and Stacy at a cottage on Corsliehill Road in Houston, Renfrewshire, at about 7.50am.
Deaths investigated
Following a post-mortem examination, detectives confirmed on Tuesday evening that Stacy's death is being treated as murder. Jim's death remains unexplained, but Police Scotland has said there is nothing to suggest anyone else was involved.
Detectives from Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team continue extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances. A post-mortem examination on Jim is expected to take place in due course.
Background of the couple
The couple married in May 2019 and ran a tree surgery business together. Company records show Stacy had resigned as a director earlier this year. The cottage and surrounding area remain sealed off as the investigation continues.
Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young of the Major Investigation Team said: 'Our thoughts remain with the families of those affected by this incident. They are understandably devastated, and we are providing them with support through specialist officers at this incredibly difficult time.'
Chief Inspector Iain Farmer added: 'This is a deeply upsetting incident for the families involved, and the impact is felt right across the local community. I am grateful for the support we have received as we complete our essential enquiries to ensure the families and local residents get the answers they need.'
Legal proceedings ended
A Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Services spokesperson said: 'Jim Mair appeared from custody at Paisley Sheriff Court on 6 July 2026 on a petition containing a single charge of assault. The case was continued for further examination and he was granted bail. When an accused person dies any proceedings against them come to an end. Mr Mair is dead, with a death report received, and as such any proceedings are at an end.'
