Cleaning blinds can be a chore, but a £1.99 item from Home Bargains is being hailed as the secret to keeping them dust-free for months, with the same product also proving effective on skirting boards.
Angela Patrone, Senior Lifestyle Reporter, shared her experience with the product, noting that while feather dusters are a popular choice for this task, they often just redistribute dust rather than removing it. After using the method, she checked her blinds a month later and found they were still completely dust-free.
The cleaning product that works on blinds
The trusted product is tumble dryer sheets. Standard dryer sheets have properties that make them well-suited to this task, despite having no obvious connection to laundry. Each sheet is constructed from a translucent network of fibres, creating a slightly coarse texture that is effective at loosening and lifting dust and grime.
Beyond capturing dust particles, the sheet transfers a positive electrical charge onto the surface, which actively repels dust and prevents it from settling and sticking to the blinds. This is also why they work on skirting boards.
How to clean blinds with dryer sheets
Any dryer sheets will do the job, but Patrone tends to use Lenor Tumble Dryer Sheets from Home Bargains, priced at £1.99, as they leave a more pleasant, longer-lasting fragrance.
The cleaning process begins by rotating the blind's control wand so one side of the blinds is fully exposed, then wiping it down thoroughly with the dryer sheet. Next, the wand is turned to reveal the opposite side, and the process is repeated. Afterwards, the wand is rotated until the blinds are positioned horizontally.
Finally, the cord is pulled so the blinds are gathered at the top of the window, and they are wiped down in that position. For blinds that have been neglected for a long time, it is recommended to first tackle them with a damp microfibre cloth, then once dry, give them a final once-over with a dryer sheet to repel any lingering dust.
