HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has started issuing approximately four million tax refund letters to UK taxpayers, with the mailout beginning on June 1 and continuing until the end of August. The letters, known as P800 notices, detail specific income tax refund amounts based on individual circumstances.
Warning to Recipients: Respond or Lose Your Refund
HMRC has warned that recipients must respond to the letters and provide any additional information requested to receive their repayment. Officials stated: “You must respond to the letter so we can make any repayments owed to you as soon as possible.”
According to HMRC, nearly one million people failed to claim tax refunds last year because they did not respond to correspondence. The average unclaimed repayment stands at £473.
Why Tax Refunds Occur
Refunds are issued annually when someone has paid too much income tax during the financial year. This typically happens for three reasons: being placed on the wrong tax code, changing jobs, or working multiple jobs simultaneously. HMRC reviews records after the tax year ends in April to determine overpayments and issues P800 letters to eligible taxpayers.
How to Claim Your Refund Quickly
The quickest way to claim a refund is digitally through a Personal Tax Account or the HMRC app. Those who do so can expect to receive their money within five working days. Alternatively, requesting a cheque may take up to six weeks. Some taxpayers may need to submit manual claims depending on their circumstances, though many refunds are processed automatically through the P800 system.
Officials added: “Last year, almost 1 million people didn't claim back the money they're owed. On average, people get £473 back when claiming a tax refund.”
