MSE Reveals Free Passport Photo Trick as Fees Increase on April 8
Free Passport Photo Guide as Costs Rise on April 8

As the cost of living continues to squeeze household budgets, Britons face another financial hit with passport application fees set to rise from April 8, 2026. However, Money Saving Expert (MSE) has highlighted a simple yet effective way to mitigate some of these increased expenses by taking your own passport photo at home.

Passport Fee Increases Confirmed for April

The UK government has officially announced that changes to passport application fees will take effect on April 8, 2026. This adjustment comes alongside other price hikes for stamps and council tax, adding further pressure to consumers already grappling with inflationary pressures. The exact new fee structure can be checked through the GOV.UK website, where current rates are listed alongside the impending increases.

How to Save Up to £13 on Your Passport Application

Founded by financial journalist Martin Lewis, MSE has urged passport applicants to consider a cost-saving alternative to traditional high-street photo services. The organisation explains that many people may be unaware that they can now take their own passport photo at home using a smartphone and upload it directly during the online application process.

This approach eliminates the need to pay for professional photos at shops or photo booths, which typically charge between £5 and £13 per set. For families renewing multiple passports, these savings could amount to a substantial sum that could be redirected toward holiday expenses or other discretionary spending.

Official Guidelines for Acceptable Passport Photos

To ensure your homemade passport photo meets official requirements and avoids application delays, MSE recommends following these key guidelines:

  • Use a smartphone or digital camera to capture a clear, in-focus colour photograph against a plain light background.
  • The image should include your head, shoulders and upper body with no other people or objects visible in the frame.
  • Avoid any editing, filtering or alteration of the original photograph as the system will automatically crop it during processing.
  • For complete details including specific requirements for children's passport photos, consult the official guidelines on Gov.uk.

MSE obtained figures through a Freedom of Information request revealing that nearly one in seven applicants (13.5%) experienced delays due to photo-related issues, underscoring the importance of following these specifications carefully.

Who Qualifies for Free Passport Services?

While most travellers will face the increased fees, certain groups remain eligible for free passport services. British nationals born on or before September 2, 1929 can obtain or renew their passports without charge. Additionally, the Post Office Check and Send service offers free secure delivery for standard applications.

However, fees still apply for urgent processing requests or frequent traveller passports containing 54 pages instead of the standard 34. With the April deadline approaching, MSE's advice provides timely financial relief for the majority of applicants who don't qualify for these exemptions.
