Richard McKay, flooring specialist and managing director at flooring company Sprung, has shared a simple mopping solution that "repels dust and keeps floors cleaner for longer." The secret ingredient is fabric conditioner, a common household item that can be added to the water in your mop bucket.
The Simple DIY Mixture
McKay recommends adding "one to two teaspoons into one litre of warm water and then using it to mop as usual with a microfibre mop." He explained that this method results in "clean floors that are easy to maintain." The softener leaves a thin anti-static layer that repels dust, dirt, and hair, keeping floors cleaner for longer.
Fabric conditioner contains cationic surfactants, which leave a treated surface in their wake. Just as it reduces static on clothes and laundry, it also prevents fluff from sticking to hard floor surfaces.
Benefits for Homes with Kids and Pets
McKay noted that this cleaning hack works well for homes with kids and pets where daily dirt becomes a nuisance. He added that "your floors will likely smell great, too." To maintain floors in pristine condition, it is essential to avoid saturating them during the cleaning process.
McKay recommended using a slightly damp mop when cleaning laminate, wood, or vinyl flooring. He also advised rotating rugs and furniture regularly to prevent pressure spots.
Alternative Natural Solution and Further Tips
For those seeking a more natural approach, McKay suggested combining "a teaspoon of white vinegar and a few drops of essential oil." When mopped onto floors, this mixture repels dust, neutralises odours, and leaves floors smelling nice.
Further advice includes avoiding abrasive cleaning products and instead choosing a pH-neutral cleanser paired with a microfibre cloth. For stubborn stains, a magic eraser can be used as an alternative to saturating the floor with a soaking wet mop.
