Five Guys Named America's Top Burger in Fast Food Poll

Five Guys Tops National Poll as America's Favourite Burger Chain

The perennial debate over America's best burger has been a long-standing culinary contention. However, a new and extensive national study conducted by YouGov aims to definitively settle this score. The poll, which surveyed Americans on their eating habits, specifically asked where their favourite fast-food burger originates. Out of all the restaurants evaluated, Five Guys emerged victorious, with a significant 15.5 percent of respondents ranking it as the best.

According to food experts cited by TastingTable, several key elements contribute to the superior quality of Five Guys burgers. These include handmade patties crafted from ground chuck, featuring an optimal 80/20 ratio of lean meat to fat. The outlet's specialists also commend the freshly baked buns and the high-quality, never-frozen ingredients such as lettuce, pickles, and tomatoes, which are delivered daily to ensure freshness.

Burger Rankings and the Surprising Fries Champion

Following closely behind Five Guys was Burger King, securing second place with 15 percent of the vote. In-N-Out Burger claimed a respectable third position with 12.1 percent. Wendy's followed in fourth place with 10.2 percent, while the global giant McDonald's surprisingly landed in last place for burgers, garnering a mere 8 percent of the preference.

However, the tables turned dramatically when the survey shifted focus to the nation's favourite fries. McDonald's rose emphatically to the top of this ranking, commanding a dominant 39.2 percent score. The fast-food behemoth attributes the distinctive taste of its fries to meticulously selected potatoes, precise cutting techniques, and the use of a specialised canola-blend oil enhanced with added flavouring.

In the fries category, Five Guys secured a distant second place with 9 percent, trailed by Chick-fil-A at 7.1 percent, Wendy's at 6.9 percent, and Burger King at 6.5 percent.

Category Leaders Across the Fast-Food Landscape

The expansive study also quizzed diners on their preferences across other major fast-food categories, revealing clear market leaders.

  • Pizza: Pizza Hut ranked first with 19.1 percent, followed by Domino's at 17.1 percent and Papa John's at 11.4 percent.
  • Chicken: Chick-fil-A dominated this category, topping the rankings with 25.3 percent.
  • Tacos: Taco Bell led decisively with 30.3 percent of the vote.
  • Deli Sandwiches: Subway overwhelmingly dominated this segment with 22.9 percent, placing it well ahead of competitors like Chipotle.

Perceptions of Quality and Value for Money

Another critical segment of the survey asked participants to identify which fast-food chains offer the best quality and the best value for money, yielding distinct results.

When it came to perceived quality, Chick-fil-A ranked first with 37.3 percent. It was followed by Jersey Mike's at 24.3 percent and Wendy's at 23.7 percent. Firehouse Subs (18.7 percent) and In-N-Out Burger (18.6 percent) completed the top five. Other notable brands in the top ten included Dairy Queen, Subway, Pizza Hut, Raising Cane's, and Popeyes.

Conversely, in the value-for-money assessment, Wendy's claimed the top spot with 21.6 percent. Taco Bell followed in second place with 18.4 percent, and Domino's took third with 16.7 percent. Burger King (16.5 percent) and Little Caesars (15.5 percent) rounded out the top five. Chick-fil-A, Subway, McDonald's, In-N-Out Burger, and Dairy Queen also featured prominently within the top ten for value.

Consumer Habits and Demographic Insights

The survey, which was based on responses from 48,400 Americans collected between March 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026, also provided illuminating data on fast-food consumption frequency. Approximately 14 percent of respondents stated they eat fast food more than once a week, while a further 16 percent reported eating it at least once a week.

YouGov notes that this demand is primarily driven by a younger, economically active demographic. Over half (51 percent) of weekly fast-food diners are under the age of 45, while 49 percent hail from middle-income households. When choosing where to eat, practical factors remain paramount. Value and discount menus are the primary drivers of visits, closely followed by the importance of a clean dining environment.

The comprehensive findings underscore the enduring dominance of fast food within American dietary patterns. They also highlight that consumers are becoming increasingly discerning, carefully weighing factors such as quality, value, and loyalty to their preferred chains when making their dining decisions.
