Firefighter's Critical Air Fryer Safety Alert After Nine UK House Fires
A senior firefighter has issued an urgent safety warning to the millions of UK households using air fryers, following a series of devastating house fires linked to the popular kitchen appliances. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service Station Manager Richard Booth has taken to social media to share crucial guidance after his team attended nine air fryer-related blazes in just ten months.
Tragic Incidents Prompt Safety Campaign
The warning comes in the wake of several serious incidents, including a tragic case last year where an 11-year-old girl lost her life in an air fryer fire. With approximately 9.8 million UK households now owning these convenient cooking devices, fire services are increasingly concerned about safety standards.
"Use an air fryer? Then do so safely!" wrote Richard Booth in a caption accompanying his educational TikTok video. "We've attended nine fires caused by air fryers in the last 10 months."
Essential Safety Guidelines for All Users
In his demonstration, Booth stood beside a typical air fryer model placed beneath kitchen cupboards – a common but potentially dangerous setup. He emphasised several critical safety measures:
- Always move the air fryer out from under cupboards during use to prevent heat buildup
- Regularly inspect the general condition of both the appliance and its plug for cracks or damage
- Ensure drawers open, close, and fit correctly without obstruction
- Clean vents regularly to prevent dangerous grease accumulation
- Never use greaseproof paper inside air fryers due to their non-stick lining
- Avoid overloading the appliance with food
- Only prepare foods considered safe according to the instruction manual
Common Causes of Air Fryer Fires
The firefighter detailed the specific incidents that prompted his team's interventions, revealing several recurring patterns:
- Four call-outs involved air fryers placed on hobs that were accidentally or deliberately switched on
- Multiple incidents resulted from poor maintenance and dirty appliances clogged with fat
- One case involved packaging left inside the air fryer drawers
"We do still recommend their use," clarified Booth, "however, they're still much safer and cheaper than using your oven when used correctly."
Public Response and Additional Precautions
The safety video has generated significant public engagement, with many users sharing their own experiences and precautions. One commenter revealed: "Love the video, great tips! Had grease proof paper in mine once and it set light! Very dangerous!"
Other recommended precautions from experienced users include cleaning the appliance after every use and unplugging it when not in operation. While air fryers remain popular for their convenience and energy efficiency, fire services emphasise that proper maintenance and placement are essential for preventing household disasters.
As these kitchen gadgets continue to grow in popularity across British homes, fire safety experts urge all users to follow these guidelines meticulously to protect their families and properties from preventable fires.
